Kinsey, sexual science, and the emptiness after ejaculation (by M)

I have uploaded the translation of the remaining part of Section 1, Chapter 2 of The Insensitive Man. In this part I illustrated how sexual science and sex therapy have ignored the idea of post-ejaculatory emptiness. I think the cause of this neglect should be attributed to Alfred Kinsey. Kinsey realized through his extensive research that there were men who do not feel good after the ejaculation. However, in his book Sexual Behavior in the Human male, he ignored the psychological diversity of ejaculatory experiences.

Kinsey deliberately states that orgasm should not be mixed up with the “pleasure” resulting from orgasm. Furthermore, Kinsey clearly states that there are various degrees of sexual satisfaction, and that there are such cases where “there is little pleasure accompanying an ejaculation.” Kinsey had realized the existence of “male frigidity.” But, surprisingly enough, just after that he declares as follows:

"But we have no statistics on the frequencies of physiologic differences, or of the various degrees of satisfaction, and, in the present study, all cases of ejaculation have been taken as evidence of orgasm, without regard to the different levels at which the orgasms have occurred. "(Alfred C. Kinsey et al., Sexual behavior in the Human Male. 1948, pp.159-160.)

Kinsey ignored the psychological diversity he had realized. By this declaration, made by Alfred Kinsey, the father of contemporary sexual science, was created the formula that ejaculation equals orgasm equals the sexual climax. And then, the issue of “male frigidity” has since disappeared from the forefront of sexual science. (The Insensitive Man, p.42.)

I think Wilhelm Reich had clearly realized and stressed that some men feel emptiness or a sense of disgust after the ejaculation, but he was the exception. Kinsey himself refered to Reich in this book, but he did not follow Reich. Three months ago I saw the movie
Kinsey directed by Bill Condon. Although this was a second-rate movie, it was a really interesting film because it provides us with lots of information about Keinsey's personal life and the American society's responses to his sex research. I would recommend you if you are interested in sexual science and/or Alfred Kinsey himself.

The next part of Chapter 2 of The Insensitive Man deals with the sense that "something is gathering there," the sense of which most men know and most women (probably) do not.

  • Very intersting post, I have read parts of Kinsey report, and to me it seems to be a merely statistical study, some how one misses the analyze of the facts. It would be interesting if someone would pick up this theme again, and the thoughts from Kinsey. A really interesting post, Harry

  • Hy dear masahiro, first you have a brillant style, I like it, then I think we do live in times of pornography, but no one will accept that, it´s good to speak openly about it. I my own do not watch too much porn as it make me feel bad, but I have a sexuality, that I cannot deny. The experiences I had I can send you in an e-mail, and in a proper moral form, I send you my e-mail under your main page, my name begins with arash, I talked about Wittgenstein.
to your book, I would love to read it in whole, I downloaded the translated section. Here some comments:

  • I think you are a very senstive man, who says that things. People often cannot accept this emptiness and try to escape from it by having as much women or sex as possible, that´s were all gets insane.
We are living in times of sexuality and maybe we force each other to be always sexual active. And beside that there is still no talks about this theme. Freud caused a sexual revolution, but there is now no one to understand people who are exhausted by this revolution or even are victims of this revolution...
Masahiro, keep on going your own way, I hope you have nice experiences in your whole life, things that satisfy you. have nothing more to write, would be delighted if you visit my blog, has also something to do with japan, and I have posted a comment in the whale stuff, but sometimes it does only showed it after reloading, hmm, ok, nice day further ok your Harry

  • Hi. harrys blog. Thank you for your posts. My book, The Insensitive Man has brought about controversy here. Many readers consider it as a strange book. Are there any books similar to this one in Germany?

    By Blogger Masahiro_Morioka, at 8:35 AM, January 27, 2006

  • Hy dear Masahiro, I think your thoughts are somehow new, I don´t think there are books like this in Germany, but I will take a look. I can remember reading books about frigidity of women, but all focused on the point that women come not to sexual statisfaction. I my own thought about this theme in 2001 and wrote some pages about it.I am not good in writing more then few pages. My thoughts are in general: that there is nothing strange to talk about one feelings. I suffered a lot by the fact that women often make me hot, but I don´t wanted to be around with them or also could not, and that sexuality brought to me frustration. There is a book called Wittgensteins Geheime Tagebücher, Wittgensteins secret diaries, there he talks about how often he masturbates the week, that the only example I know. Then there is Goethe who always speaks in awe of the sexual act. That´s the common view of the Germans. Critical thoughts are not even allowed in councelling!
I do not think that you book is strange, I for example personally would prefer tenderness to sex. That´s sth. more lasting due to good feelings.
I will take a look out for similiar books in German, and when I find one I will tell you.
have you ever thought about what society has an advance from those felings you describe? that´s a hard question I think. So i go now on the search. Your Harry

  • I take a general search in books about sexuality but there are all about joy! I remember that Gandhi, had always the feeling that with a ejaculation, his whole efforts and world is destroyed. But as we all know was Gandhi an asket, so that may not help you either much. I think you should conact this fact of frustration, with frustration in other areas of life, like eating a lot and then feeling too fed. It´s just an idea. your Harry

  • harrys blog, I have not read Wittgenstein's secret diaries because it has not been translated into Japanese. Most of his works have been translated, including his earlier and later diaries on religion and ethics... Probably his secret diary is the only book we cannot read in Japanese. The relationship between his philosophy and his sexuality is a really interesting topic for me.

  • hy Masahiro, I will try to get the book from the library and see whether I can find some nice comments, then I will translate them and send it to you. That may take some time, because I think only the students library has this book, and I am no more member there, but a friend of me is still member, I will also look for books in German about sexualscience. I only can remember about Wittgenstein in one part saying he has not masturbated for 16 days! And he somehow feel like he is in heaven. But I don´t know if he says that this is due to not masturbating, there are also speculations about Wittgenstein having been homosexual, but I think there is few evidence about that.ok, I will try to get that book, and translate interesting parts. till then your Harry

  • Hy masahiro, I borrowed the book secret diaries, it´s very intersting, I will send you translations, but unfortunately only comment whether he has masturbated or not, what ´s your e-mail? can I send the translations to the e-mail under lifestudies page? it´s a very interesting book, I also borrowed two other diaries of Wittgenstein, and with the secret diaries there is also an essay about ethics? Are you interested in it? let me know, and have a good time! When is Japanese new year? and just call me harry or arash, thanks, your Harry
